How to Use Your Rainbow SRX as a Whole-Room Air Purifier
The Rainbow® cleaning system has always done more than pick up dirt. Because it filters everything it captures through water, it can also freshen the air in a room, and with the current SRX model from Rexair® that air-cleaning job is easier and more deliberate than ever. If you own an SRX, or are weighing one up, here is how to get real value from its air-purifying features.
Why a water-filtration vacuum can clean your air

A conventional vacuum pulls air through a bag or dry filter and pushes it back into the room, often carrying fine dust along with it. A Rainbow works differently. Air is drawn through a basin of water, where dust, pollen, pet dander, and other particles are trapped on contact and held in the water rather than blown back into the air you breathe. Because those particles are captured wet, they stay put even if the unit is moved or bumped. Run the machine with the floor tools removed and it simply becomes a powerful air scrubber for the whole room.
Setting the SRX to air-cleaning mode

The SRX makes this mode refreshingly straightforward:
- Remove the floor tools and wands. Leaving the hose open gives the widest air intake, so the unit can move the most air.
- Select the air-cleaning setting. On the SRX control dial, look for the fan-and-air-waves icon that marks the air-cleaning function.
- Choose a gentle speed. The SRX uses a four-speed Airflow Control. You do not need full suction to clean air, so a lower setting is quieter, uses less energy, and is well suited to running for a longer stretch.
- Use the Timer Mode. The SRX can shut itself off automatically after 30, 60, or 90 minutes, so you can start it and walk away without worrying about leaving it on.
Close the doors and windows of the room you are treating so the air keeps recirculating through the water instead of being replaced by untreated air from outside.
When it helps most
Running the SRX in air-cleaning mode pays off at predictable moments:
- Allergy season, when pollen drifts in on clothing and through open doors.
- After cooking, to pull lingering odors and greasy air out of the kitchen.
- In pet-heavy rooms, where dander and stray hair keep the air feeling stuffy.
- Before guests arrive, for a quick freshen-up, where a 30-minute timer setting is just right.
Many owners like to run it on a low speed while they tidy up elsewhere in the house, then let the timer switch it off on its own.
Keep the water fresh

Remember that with a Rainbow, the water is the filter. When you are purifying air, the basin is still collecting everything it pulls from the room, so treat it exactly as you would after vacuuming. Empty and rinse the water pan after each session rather than letting dirty water sit, and refill with clean, cool water every time you run it. Wipe the separator and basin regularly so nothing has a chance to grow or turn musty. A drop or two of a genuine Rainbow fragrance in fresh water is a pleasant finishing touch, letting the unit gently scent the room while it cleans, though clean water alone does the real work.
Used this way, your SRX earns its keep between deep-cleaning days, quietly clearing the air whenever the household needs it. If you ever need genuine Rainbow® parts, fragrances, or service to keep it running its best, the team at RainVac is glad to help.
