Where and How to Store Your Rainbow Vacuum Between Cleanings

by Horace Jennings

Most Rainbow care advice focuses on what happens while you are cleaning: fresh water, a rinsed separator, a tidy filter. But a surprising amount of wear happens afterward, in the closet, the garage, or the corner of the laundry room where the machine waits for next week. A few minutes of thought about how you put your Rainbow away can save you a cracked fitting, a kinked hose, or a lost attachment later.

Start with a Dry, Empty Machine

The single best storage habit is simply not storing water. Empty the basin after every session, give it and the separator a quick rinse, and let the parts air out before you close things up. Standing water that sits for days can turn musty, and a damp, closed-up machine is exactly where odors like to settle in.

  • Pour out the basin and rinse it with plain water.
  • Wipe down the inside rim and the area around the separator.
  • Leave the parts open to dry for a while before reassembling for storage.

Your owner's manual is the final word on how your particular model comes apart, so use it as your guide for what can be removed and rinsed.

Give the Hose Gentle Curves

The hose is the part that works hardest and gets the least respect. The enemy is not use; it is sharp bends and tight crimps held in place for months. When you put the hose away, coil it in wide, loose loops rather than folding it tightly or wrapping it around the machine like a rope. If your model has an electric hose, be especially kind to the cord and the fittings at each end, since those are the points that flex most.

  • Avoid hanging the hose over a sharp edge or a thin hook.
  • Never leave heavy objects resting on the hose.
  • Do not let the machine roll over the hose or cord.

It is also worth running your hand along the hose once in a while. A soft spot, a crack, or a coupling that has loosened is much easier to deal with when you catch it before it turns into a loss of suction in the middle of a cleaning day.

Keep Attachments Together

Every owner has a story about the crevice tool that disappeared. An attachment caddy, or even a simple dedicated bag or bin, keeps the dusting brush, crevice tool, and other accessories in one place and protects them from being crushed under something heavier. If you tend to use the same two or three attachments for most jobs, keep those on top so you are not tempted to leave them lying around the house.

A quick tip: before you put things away, glance at each attachment. Hair wrapped around a brush or lint in a crevice tool is easy to clear right then and annoying to discover the next time you are in a hurry.

Think About How You Move the Machine

A Rainbow is a solid piece of equipment, and it is heavier when filled with water. That is one more reason to empty it before you carry it up or down stairs or lift it into a storage spot. Rolling it on its dolly across flat floors is easy on your back, but lifting it by the hose or a cord is hard on the machine. Hold it by the body, and keep an eye on the wheels and dolly for debris like thread or hair that can build up around the axles.

Choose a Sensible Spot

A closet or a corner of the utility room is fine. What you want to avoid are extremes: very hot attics, damp basements with active moisture, or spots where the cord and hose will be stepped on. A stable, out-of-the-way place at normal indoor temperatures keeps rubber, plastic, and metal parts in good shape for years.

A Small Routine That Pays Off

None of this takes long, and it fits neatly into the end of a cleaning session: empty, rinse, dry, coil, and tuck the attachments away. Owners who build the habit tend to have fewer surprises and longer-lasting hoses and fittings. And if you do find a worn hose, a missing attachment, or a part that has had enough, RainVac carries genuine Rainbow parts and can help you track down the right replacement.
